If the program won't install or open:
(1) Make sure that you copy the entire folder for that chapter to your hard drive. Don't read or run files directly off the CD-ROM.
(2) Right click on the icon for the program or file. Under Properties, General, then Attributes, ensure the file is NOT checked 'Read Only.' Verify this for all files in use.
(3) Copy the folder for the chapter to an area where it will have a shorter path name. Too many subdirectories cause some of the DOS executables to not run since they are looking for files with longer names than can 'fit' in the space allotted to file names in the original computer code (we've seen this for FRAGSTATS and HarvestLite).
(4) Be sure there are NO spaces, blanks or dashes in the upper-level directories of the entire pathname. If necessary, rename the upper-level directories or move the chapter folder to a new directory.
(5) You may need special permissions from your administrator to install the program (e.g., ArcExplorer using the aeclient.exe file for Chapters 3 and 8, or Bachmap using the mapinst.exe file for Chapter 16).
(6) In the case of FRAGSTATS:
The version of Fragstats included on the CD (FRAGSTATS
2.0) is not compatible with Windows XP.
Download the latest shareware version of Fragstats 3.0
from the web at:
http://www.umass.edu/landeco/research/fragstats/fragstats.html
If the program opens, but won't read any files or run:
(1) Try steps 1-4 above (try step 6, if applicable).
(2) Did you type the full file name with extensions?
e.g.,
site.txt
patgrid.map
braz.fra
(3) Double-check that you are calling a file from the
correct directory.
