Preliminary NCEAS Working Group Agenda

When, and how much, does fear matter?

 

Meeting 1. April 13-15, 2005

 

Note: This agenda is subject to change, both before the start of the working group, and as the group proceeds. Suggestions and comments are welcome.

 

Day 1: Wednesday April 13.

 

8:30- 9:15 Get to know each other (2-3 minute introductions from each participant as to what they do, why they’ve joined the working group and what they hope to get from it)

 

9:15 – 10:00 Welcome and Introduction by Evan and Dan: Overall goals and structure of working group.

 

10:00 – 10:15 BREAK

 

10:15 -12:00 Opening activity: meta-analysis exercise on gathering published results from papers.

 

12:00- 1:00 LUNCH

 

1:00 – 2:30 Present results and questions arising from opening activity.

 

2:30-2:45 Orientation on NCEAS computing resources

 

2:45-3:00 BREAK

 

3:00 – 5:00 Discussion: how to define of trait-mediated effects: what counts, what does not. Anticipated product: consensus on what types of studies/data to include in meta-analysis. Agreed-upon guidelines to be distributed as a handout for later reference.

 

Day 2. Thursday April 14, 2005

 

8:30-9:00 Discussion: Further thoughts on TMI definitions.

 

9:30-10:00 Presentation by Evan and Dan: Specific goals of this working group (specific questions, anticipated papers).

 

10:00 – 10:15 BREAK

 

10:15-12:00 Split into small groups to develop plan for each of these specific goals. People are welcome to wander between groups

 

12:00-1:00 LUNCH

 

1:00-1:30 Small groups report back to large group on their ideas/progress.

 

1:30-3:30 Continue small-group discussions. BREAK from 2:30 to 2:45

 

3:30-5:00 Small groups report back to large group on their ideas/progress.

Day 3. Friday, April 15, 2005

 

Note: if work has gone faster than expected and some of the goals of Friday’s schedule appear redundant after the first two days, we may alter the schedule to allow more time for actual work on the individual goals (e.g., model development, literature searching, data extraction).

 

8:30-9:30 TMI definitions revisited

 

9:30-10:30 Open forum on the goals of the working group: proposed additions/deletions?

 

10:30-10:45  BREAK

 

10:45-12:00  Discuss general plans for remainder of working group (objectives, schedule, anticipated products). Settle on schedule for fall meeting. If this is completed early, may proceed to following sessions before lunch.

 

12:00-1:00 LUNCH

 

1:00 – 1:30  Who wants to work on what objectives?

 

1:30 – 2:00  Logistics for remainder of working group. Discussion of scheduling for meeting #2.

 

2:00 – 2:15 Reimbursement arrangements

 

2:15-2:30 BREAK

 

2:30-3:30 Small groups develop concrete plan for how their specific objective is to be achieved.

 

3:30-5:00 Present small group plans to whole group, distribute a copy of each small group’s plan to whole group.

 

 

 

Looking ahead:

 

Between Meeting 1 and Meeting 2: collect data / develop models for objectives

 

Meeting 2: Fall 2005. Analysis of models and meta-analytic data, interface between models and data. Results are then parsed into workable units suitable for publication, and authorship tasks assigned.

 

Between Meeting 2 and Meeting 3: Writing

 

Meeting 3: reviewing drafts, brainstorming new directions.
