Jim Regetz Biography [1]

Education:

Ph.D., Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University

MESM, Bren School, UC Santa Barbara

B.A., Biology, Williams College

Experience:

Jim melds formal training in ecology and environmental science with practical experience tackling diverse computational and quantitative challenges. A participant in multiple NCEAS working groups both before and during his current tenure, Jim has worked on topics such as habitat conservation plans, recovery plans, population viability analyses, Pacific salmon population modeling, terrestrial ecosystem services, and phylogenetic analysis. He brings to NCEAS expertise in ecological data processing, statistical analysis and estimation, numerical optimization, and ecological modeling and simulation. He has also programmed in a variety of contexts, including:

  • quantitative analysis in R, Matlab/Octave, and SAS
  • scientific programming in C/C++
  • database development using SQL
  • specialty applications such as WinBUGS
  • multi-purpose scripting in Python, Perl, and Bash
  • spatial data processing with PostGIS, GDAL/OGR, GRASS, and ArcView/ArcGIS
  • web development in HTML, PHP, and Ruby on Rails

Jim is in residence at the center and available for consultation on strategic planning for data analysis as well as implementation of tools and methods for specific analysis needs.
