MATLAB is a high-level programming language and environment for computational analysis. Although MATLAB has its origins as a matrix-oriented system with fast and robust linear algebra capabilities, it can be used for many kinds of analyses. The base software is extended by MATLAB Toolboxes, which provide additional functionality for tasks such as signal processing, designing and simulating neural networks, solving large scale optimization problems, working with symbolic math expressions, and more. Traditionally, MATLAB has been especially popular among scientists who wish to rapidly develop and run simulation models (including population viability analysis), and it is also widely used by those working with climate data, oceanographic data, and other large-scale physical data.
