NCEAS scientific projects  leverage NCEAS’ core strengths – unleashing the power of collaboration to advance the analysis and synthesis of existing data. Our projects are inspired both by the interests and needs of the scientific community and the goal of directly informing policy and sustainable management practices. Periodic “Calls for Proposals ” are issued to the scientific community to solicit project ideas for new Working Group collaborations.
We aim to advance both scientific knowledge and the methods and tools  needed for synthesis research. NCEAS has developed powerful and efficient approaches for understanding ecological patterns and the influences of human actions on those patterns. A diversity of approaches to modeling and geospatial analysis are integral to many of our projects.
Scientific research activities supported by NCEAS include:
- Working Groups  collaborate at NCEAS through periodic meetings, and virtually through sustained shared cyberinfrastructure over a course of months to years.
- In-residence Scholars  carry out synthetic research projects based on existing information and play an integral role in supporting NCEAS' mission.
- Distributed Graduate Seminars  engage hundreds of students in collaborative research.
In a new scientific collaboration, NCEAS , The Nature Conservancy (TNC ) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS ) have formed Science for Nature and People (SNAP ). SNAP Working Group projects will each address major questions at the trade-off frontier of nature conservation, economic development, and human well-being.
