Son of Louis Agassiz and director of the MCZ after his death. The wealthy and well-connected Alexander Agassiz continued to be the de facto head of the museum even after his pro forma retirement. Agassiz established a marine laboratory at Newport, Rhode Island that operated from 1877 until his death in 1910, with some visitors present as early as 1875. |
