Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859)

Prussian naturalist, explorer, and politician. Patron of L. Agassiz. His Personal Narrative was inspirational to later travellers in the tropics, notably both Darwin and Wallace.
