North American Mammalian Paleofaunal Database: Informal and Manuscript Genus Names
The following North American fossil mammal genus names appear in the paleofaunal database, but as far as I can tell they have never been formally described and are therefore nomina nuda. Similarly, in several cases I have created informal names like "Clarendonian peccary" for genera that are clearly thought to be distinct by key workers, but have not yet been described.
I have kept these names in the lists for lack of any better alternatives.
If you know of a publication that has validated any of these names, please report it to me.
The apparent nomina nuda are:
- Aptenohyus (Hemingfordian/Barstovian tayassuid)
- Auraria (Puercan condylarth: apparent planned type locality Alexander)
- Frictops = "Novacek leptictid" (Chadronian leptictid: apparent planned type locality Flagstaff Rim)
- Prothomomys (Hemphillian geomyid: apparent planned type locality Warren)
