Realistically, the cell produces a compound at a (relatively) constant rate.
As a result, the cell can be modeled as a continuous point source.
The solutions for point and spherical sources converge quickly/
The equation for a spherical source does not have an analytical steady-state solution. Even after making lots of valid simplifications, the solution is not nearly as simple as a point source (though the do the exact same thing).
Thus, the following models will use a continuous point source to model signal production by bacteria.
