Marty Downs, Deputy Director, LTER Network Communications Office

Martha (Marty) Downs is the Deputy Director for the Long Term Ecological Research Network Communications Office (LTER NCO), based at NCEAS. The NSF-funded LTER Network includes 25 sites and engages thousands of researchers and students to study ecological processes operating on long time scales and large spatial scales. Marty joined the newly-created NCO in 2016 to enhance awareness and understanding of LTER research within the LTER community and across diverse constituencies and stakeholders.

Marty brings over 15 years of science communications experience to NCEAS, most recently at The Nature Conservancy, where she wrote for the Cool Green Science blog and led the Science Impact Project. At Brown University, she started in media relations and later served as Associate Director of the Environmental Change Initiative, laying the groundwork for the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society.

A background in long-term ecological research, including experience at several LTER sites, grounds Marty’s commitment to effective scientific communication. She earned her M.S. in science journalism from Boston University and her B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University.
