NCEAS director, Ben Halpern, is among the newest group of distinguished scientists to become a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, a prestigious honor in recognition of notable contributions to science. Halpern joins over 400 other prominent scientists, including Sylvia Earle, Paul Ehrlich, John Holdren, Peter Raven, and Jill Tarter.

“The California Academy of Sciences has strong history exploring life on earth and communicating about science's role in understanding the planet,” said Halpern. “As a Fellow I will have an opportunity to play a role in that mission.”

According to the California Academy of Science Fellows Office, "Dr. Halpern was elected on the weight of his influence in the field of conservation science, the impact of this work on conservation planning organizations, and his many leadership roles. His research contributions have informed conservation action relevant to marines reserves, coastal planning and management, marine threat assessment, and fisheries management."

Nominated by their colleagues and appointed by the Board of Trustees, the Fellows remain members of the Fellowship for life and work to extend the Academy's positive impact on research, public engagement, and education through individual and collaborative efforts with Academy researchers and staff.

“The recognition as a Fellow is of course wonderful; the chance to be part of a community of people trying to make a difference is really exciting,” said Halpern.

All of the newly elected fellows will be honored at the 2017 Annual Fellows Gathering on Tuesday, October 10.
