NCEAS Workshop to Conceptualize an Institute for Sustainable Earth and Environmental Software (ISEES)

Software lifecycle

On August 13-14, 2013 a diverse group of more than 30 scientists from the environmental and earth sciences are convening at NCEAS to help shape a vision for a new software institute for environmental science. Scientists will participate in one of two parallel workshops focusing on the Software Lifecycle and Software Components.  Workshop leaders are Peter Fox from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Chris Mattmann from the University of Southern California, and Mark Schildhauer and Matt Jones from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis.

This is part of a one-year community-driven process, sponsored by National Science Foundation (NSF), to develop a strategic plan for the creation and operation of the Institute for Sustainable Earth and Environmental Software (ISEES). Deploying a series of design workshops that use proven, formal planning and assessment methods, the participants will define a mission for ISEES that spans the creation, interoperability, and sustainability of a compelling suite of software systems that will advance earth and environmental scientific research.

Following the software components and lifecycle workshops, NCEAS will convene additional planning workshops that will focus on sustainability and governance, workforce development, and community engagement for the envisioned software institute. Results of these workshops will be synthesized in a publication that will be co-authored by all participants.

The workshops’ conclusions will form the foundation of a plan for a major NSF investment in a software institute that coordinates the development and sustainable support of innovative and interoperable scientific software tools and cyberinfrastructure that can transform science at the intersection of earth, environmental, and life sciences.
