Our scientific computing team assists resident scientists and visiting working groups in solving specific analysis and computing challenges. We provide powerful high-performance computing to address challenges such as processing large amounts of diverse data, optimizing models, and conducting geospatial analyses.
We also provide technical support for residents and remote researchers, as well as trainings to empower scientists to leverage data science tools.
In keeping with our mission of collaboration and synthesis, we actively promote open science best practices by generating and promoting open-source, non-proprietary computing solutions that can be developed communally and shared easily among researchers.
We provide three types of services:
Data Science and Scientific Programming Support
We provide specialized services for data acquisition and integration, statistical analysis and modeling, and data documentation and archiving. Our team is available for consultation on a variety of critical computational tasks, such as:
- Organizing and managing complex datasets
- Locating and acquiring additional datasets
- Selecting appropriate quantitative methods and scientific software
- Designing custom analytical solutions and data processing pipelines
- Preserving and promoting your products on the Web - from derived datasets and terminological glossaries/vocabularies, to scripts, model codes, and interactive “web applications”
Online Collaboration Services for Working Groups
We provide an array of services that promote Team Science and facilitate online collaboration among working group participants, even after they have returned to their respective institutions. Each working groups has access to the following and more:
1. NCEAS analytical servers: Our most powerful system currently offers 384GB of RAM memory, along with 44 cores (CPUs), and several terabytes of fast storage. Several scientific software packages – such as R/RStudio, Python, Matlab, and QGIS – are already installed.
2. A suite of collaborative tools:
- Online shared space to store documents
- Mailing list to reach out the entire group and doing automatic archiving
- Chat room to communicating quickly when collaborating remotely
- Shared space on NCEAS’ analytical server to manage and process data in a centralized manner
Desktop and Technological Support
We maintain modern computing infrastructure and offer technological assistance for visiting and resident researchers, including wireless and wired networking, email, websites, shared file systems, a large library of scientific software, and well-equipped desktop systems throughout our facility.
Additional services are available upon request, and we can work with you to develop novel solutions to technical challenges you might encounter.

New Working Groups will be contacted about their computing requirements prior to their first visit. We will provide a brief introduction to our cyberinfrastructure and informatics during that first meeting. We are also available to assist working group leaders with publicizing data and technical products.
