30 most important fish lifecycle database

We mapped the life cycles of 30 of the most commercially important fish species, and confirmed that the most important in terms of total catch are overwhelmingly migratory species. We can now identify the most important areas for spawning, feeding and nurseries; determine whether these areas are inside or outside of existing protected areas; quantify the relative importance of different jurisdictions (countries and states/departments) for various species’ ranges, and associate critical wetlands with fisheries areas, to ensure proper management.

Production, use, and fate of all plastics ever made

Plastics have outgrown most man-made materials and have long been under environmental scrutiny. However, robust global information, particularly about their end-of-life fate, is lacking. By identifying and synthesizing dispersed data on production, use, and end-of-life management of polymer resins, synthetic fibers, and additives, we present the first global analysis of all mass-produced plastics ever manufactured. We estimate that 8300 million metric tons (Mt) as of virgin plastics have been produced to date.
