    The GeoLink knowledge graph

GeoLink has leveraged linked data principles to create a dataset that allows users to seamlessly query and reason over some of the most prominent geoscience metadata repositories in the United States. The GeoLink dataset includes such diverse information as port calls made by oceanographic cruises, physical sample metadata, research project funding and staffing, and authorship of technical reports.

Skills and Knowledge for Data-Intensive Environmental Research

The scale and magnitude of complex and pressing environmental issues lend urgency to the need for integrative and reproducible analysis and synthesis, facilitated by data-intensive research approaches. However, the recent pace of technological change has been such that appropriate skills to accomplish data-intensive research are lacking among environmental scientists, who more than ever need greater access to training and mentorship in computational skills.

Land cover change maps for Mato Grosso State in Brazil: 2001-2016

This data sets include yearly maps of land cover classification for the state of Mato Grosso, Brasil, from 2001 to 2016, based on MODIS image time series at 250 meter spatial resolution. Ground samples consisting of 2,115 time series with known labels are used as training data for a support vector machine classifier. The classes include natural and human-transformed land areas, discriminating among different agricultural crops in state of Mato Grosso, Brazil's agricultural frontier.

Size, age, renewal, and discharge of groundwater carbon

Groundwater carbon (C) supply to lakes and streams is important to understanding the role of inland waters in global and regional cycles and in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. We provide new estimates of the size and discharge of the groundwater C pool using data from a broad survey of groundwater C, information on the depth distribution of groundwater, and data on groundwater age. About 0.25 × 106 km3 of the 8 × 106 km3 of groundwater resource is within 100 m of the surface and 4.2 × 106 km3 is above 2000 m.

Indicators of marine ecosystem integrity for Canada's Pacific: An expert-based hierarchical approach

There is great interest and rapid progress around the world in developing sets of indicators of marine ecosystem integrity for assessment and management. However, the complexity of coastal marine ecosystems can challenge such efforts. To address this challenge, an expert-based, hierarchical, and adaptive approach was developed with the objectives of healthy marine ecosystems and community partnerships in monitoring and management.

Resurrecting the public record: Assessing stakeholder participation in Alaska's fisheries

Stakeholder participation is lauded as a key component of successful fisheries management, but few studies have characterized and assessed this participation. Using integrated data digitization and coding methods, this paper tests out a new method to analyze archived management proposals submitted to Alaska's Board of Fish and explores whether this approach can be used to assess stakeholder participation and success rates in Cook Inlet, Bristol Bay, and Southeast Alaska from 2000 to 2015.

Strategic Communication to Achieve Carbon Neutrality within the University of California

Many actions will be necessary for the University of California to meet its goal of carbon neutrality by 2025 – from implementing physical measures on the campuses to purchasing carbon offsets. For these actions to be successful, there must be support for them from students, faculty, staff, and administrators on all UC campuses. To this end, UC Santa Barbara’s Institute for Energy Efficiency and NCEAS co-facilitated a working group to develop a research-based communication and engagement strategy that is inclusive and aligns with the values and priorities of the UC community.

Tools for measuring, modelling, and valuing ecosystem services

Increasing interest in measuring, modelling and valuing ecosystem services (ES), the benefits that ecosystems provide to people, has resulted in the development of an array of ES assessment tools in recent years. Selecting an appropriate tool for measuring and modelling ES can be challenging. This document provides guidance for practitioners on existing tools that can be applied to measure or model ES provided by important sites for biodiversity and nature conservation, including Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), natural World Heritage sites (WHS), and protected areas (PAs).

Better late than never: a synthesis of strategic land retirement and restoration in California

Strategic retirement and restoration of agricultural lands is a critical conservation opportunity globally. The objective of this synthesis was to examine whether ecological habitat assessments, endangered species historical occurrence data, and restoration research can be used to develop evidence‐based strategy for retiring and restoring agricultural lands. The San Joaquin Desert (SJD) of California is a prominent example because it experienced an extensive conversion to agriculture.
